Day of the Dead San Antonio 2019 Festival at La Villita in Downtown San Antonio
La Villita will come alive with the Day of the Dead San Antonio 2019 Festival November 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The three-day family friendly event features decorative characters and engaging activities with live music and performances, workshops, children’s activities, and Mexican food, drinks and shopping are the highlights of this family. La Villita will be transformed into a magical world of the Day of the Dead as Mojigangas and Catrinas greet visitors. Giant craneos, mirroring the calaveras, or skulls, that are synonymous with the Day of the Dead, will delight everyone.
Each one has been thoughtfully decorated by local and Mexican artists to create works of art in honor of the holiday. The festival’s Altar de Muertos, near the Little Church at La Villita, provides an opportunity to pause for remembrance. After sunset, a candlelight vigil will celebrate and honor the lives of loved ones who have left and now rest in peace. Music and dance will fill the festival with 34 separate live performances scheduled to entertain and delight. Adults can get into the “spirit” of the holiday at the Spirits Bar with cervezas, tequila and mezcal, and everyone will enjoy a fabulous array of food options from restaurants including La Gloria, Aldaco’s Mexican Cuisine, Villa Rica, Costa Pacifica, La Panaderia and True Flavors. Children can enjoy piñata making and smashing, sugar skull decorating, traditional crafts workshops and a puppet show in the festival’s children’s area.
